Petty Officer 3rd Class Felicia Vasquez, a native of Uvalde, recently participated in BALTOPS, which represents Exercise Baltic Operations, aboard the USS Fort McHenry, a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship.

The exercise – comprising 18 nations, submarines, ships, aircraft, and more than 8,000 personnel – took place June 8-21 in the Baltic Sea.

The multi-national exercise provided a training opportunity that fostered cooperative relationships critical to ensuring safety at sea and security of the world’s interconnected oceans.

There were approximately 40 officers from the U.S. Navy and Marines onboard the USS Fort McHenry for the exercise. Most of the Navy officers were part of the ship’s crew.

For Vasquez, the opportunity to serve is important. Her three-year anniversary in the U.S. Navy will be in December.

“Being in the Navy means I get to be a part of something bigger than myself. Every little thing I do contributes to something bigger than myself in the grand scheme of things, such as keeping my ship operational,” she said.
