A driver and his passenger had to be extracted from their Buick Tuesday night after they were struck by a Uvalde Police Department patrol vehicle at the intersection of Wood and Main streets. The force of the impact caused the Buick to strike a light pole.
UPD Sgt. Daniel Coronado was behind the wheel of the Dodge Charger. Coronado, along with the driver and passenger of the Buick were taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital via Uvalde EMS. The officer was later released in stable condition. The condition of the other driver and his passenger is not yet known.
First responders, including Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department, Uvalde EMS, Uvalde Police, Texas Department of Public Safety and Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:04 p.m.
Firefighters extracted the driver and the passenger from the Buick.
“Had to cut the passenger door,” said fire chief Gene Ayala.
Rodriguez did not say whether Coronado was responding to an emergency when the crash occurred. The incident is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
