The University Interscholastic League has released its guidelines for summer strength and conditioning and sport specific instruction.

According to the UIL’s press release distributed late last Friday, public school athletic programs may start summer strength and conditioning activities on June 8.

“We just received the guidelines,” said Uvalde High School head coach and athletic director R.T. Gonzales. “In the next few days, I will discuss with [Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent] Dr. [Hal] Harrell our plan and how to roll things out next Monday.

“The summer strength and conditioning program will be different from what we have done in the past, but at this point, we are willing to do whatever it takes to get back on track and working with our athletes,” Gonzales said.

“We will see some pre-screening, including checking the temperature of the athletes. We will limit the amount of athletes who can be in the weight room at the same time,” Gonzales said. “The health and safety of our kids will always come first. When we finalize our plans for next week, every decision will be based on keeping our athletes safe.

Gonzales said that he and his coaches will ease the athletes into condition.

“We are going on three months of not having an in-person training program. For us, the main thing we want to accomplish is easing our kids into competitive shape,” Gonzales said. “This will be a crucial time for our athletes. We will train for injury prevention. We want to put them into a position to be successful for the season ahead following three months of no conditioning.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work with our athletes, and we want to make sure we do our part in continuing to practice social distancing and follow the guidelines set forth by the UIL, so come fall, we get to enjoy our sports,” Gonzales said.

The UIL will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and other federal guidance to determine any potential modification of their summer guidelines.
