Two wrecks, five people hospitalized

Five people were hospitalized, including a 1-year-old child, Thursday following two separate vehicle collisions that occurred 30 minutes apart.

Uvalde Police were first dispatched at 3:02 p.m. to a two-vehicle wreck in the 1800 block of Garner Field Road.

According to police, the wreck occurred as Ricardo Contreras was traveling east on the roadway in a 2017 Ford F-150 and Judy Gonzales was traveling west in a 1999 Honda Accord.

“Contreras struck her head-on,” said Lt. Mariano Pargas. “He said he fell asleep and drove into oncoming traffic.”

Contreras was taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital via Uvalde EMS and Gonzales was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio. No citations were issued at the scene.

At approximately 3:32 p.m., police were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Ham Lane and East Main Street.

Those involved included Matthew Ayala, driving a 2008 Toyota Tundra; Pilar Newberry, 2017 Chevrolet Silverado; and Donna Goodson, 2018 Toyota Camry.

According to police, Goodson and Newberry were stopped facing north at the intersection when Ayala struck Newberry from behind, causing Newberry to strike Goodson.

Ayala, Newberry and Newberry’s 1-year-old passenger were taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital via Uvalde EMS.

No citations were issued at the scene.
