Lockhart whips Coyotes 65-20

It was a tough ending to what has been a long, rough football season for the Uvalde Coyotes.

Friday night in the Honey Bowl, the Lockhart Lions trounced the Uvalde Coyotes, 65-20, in the final football game of the year.

The Lions capitalized on Uvalde mistakes in the first half as they rolled to a 37-7 half-time lead.

They scored four more touchdowns in the second half on the way to handing the Coyotes their worst defeat of the season.

“It was a tough game, but a good experience for our younger kids that we are going to carry into our off-season,” said Uvalde High School head football coach R.T. Gonzales.

“Going into the off-season, we know what we have to do to compete against teams of Lockhart’s caliber,” said Gonzales. “It’s a process, and we’re in the part of the process of figuring out what it’s going to take to be a top four team and what we have to do this off-season to get us there for 2019.”

Lockhart won the coin toss and elected to defer their option for the second half.

On the opening kickoff, the Lions were successful on an onside kick and took control of the ball at their own 49-yard line.

From there, the Lions put together a four-play drive that ended on an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jackie Edwards Jr. to wide receiver Kourtland Zambrano.

Alfredo Jaimes made the extra-point kick and Lockhart claimed a 7-0 lead with 10:48 left in the opening period.

On their first offensive possession of the game, the Coyotes moved the ball from their 35-yard line to the Lockhart 24-yard line.

On a first down play, defensive back Adrian Yanez stepped in front of the intended receiver and intercepted the ball.

Yanez picked off the pass at the Lockhart two-yard line and returned it 19 yards to the Lockhart 21.

From that point, the Lions put together an impressive 13-play touchdown drive.

They topped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run by running back Daequan Ellison.

The Lions kept the drive alive as they were successful on a fake punt near midfield on fourth down.

Down 14-0, the Coyotes began their next possession at their 44-yard line.

Three plays later, they faced a fourth down.

The Coyotes set up to punt the ball away, but on the snap from center, the ball sailed over the head of punter Emmanuel Gonzales.

Lockhart eventually came up with the ball and began their next possession at the Uvalde 22-yard line.

Three plays later, running back Jesus Aldana scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

Alfredo Jaimes made the extra-point kick to extend the Lockhart lead to 21-0 with six seconds left in the first period.

Three plays and a punt later, the Lions started with the ball at their 28-yard line.

From that spot, they  advanced the ball to the Uvalde seven, but the Coyotes forced them to attempt a field goal on fourth down.

Alfredo Jaimes connected on his 30-yard field goal to give Lockhart a 24-0 advantage.

Following the kickoff return and a five-yard penalty on Lockhart for being off-side on the play, the Coyotes started with the ball at their 48.

On the first play, quarterback Sotero Martinez threw a screen pass to wide receiver Chris Embers who went 52 yards for a Uvalde touchdown.

Matthew Avila kicked the extra point and the Coyotes cut the Lockhart lead to 24-7 with 7:40 left in the first half. Lockhart added a pair of touchdowns later in the period as Daequan Ellison caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jackie Edwards Jr. and scored on a 46-yard touchdown run.

Up 37-7, the Lions scored twice in the third period.

On the third play of the second half, Daequan Ellison scored on a 57-yard touchdown run.

Later in the period, running back Daetron Ellison scored on a 16-yard touchdown run.

Lockhart’s seven play, 43-yard drive was set up when the Coyotes faked a punt but did not make enough yards for the first down on fourth down.

Trailing 51-7, the Coyotes took possession of the ball following the first play of the fourth period.

Linebacker Jacob Albarado forced Daequan Ellison to fumble the ball and defensive back Ryan De La Cruz covered the ball at the Lockhart 19-yard line.

On the next play, the Coyotes successfully executed a lateral pass and a vertical pass for a touchdown.

Quarterback Donovan Davila tossed a lateral pass to Sotero Martinez, who then threw a pass to wide receiver D’Andre Carroll in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown.

The conversion kick failed, but the Coyotes cut the deficit to 51-13.

Up by 38 points, the Lions came on to score twice more in the ball game.

Daequan Ellison scored on a 63-yard touchdown and running back Noah Garcia scored on a one-yard run.

Lockhart’s final touchdown drive was set up by a pass interception.

On the kickoff following Garcia’s touchdown, Donovan Amaya fielded the ball at the 10-yard line, followed some blocks by his teammates, and raced all the way to the end zone to complete a 90-yard touchdown.

Matthew Avila’s successful conversion kick cut Lockhart’s final margin of victory to 45 points.

With the loss, the Coyotes finished the season with a 2-5 record in District 14-5A Division II play and a 2-8 record for the season.

“I’m proud of these guys. They fought all season and did a great job of handling adversity. That’s part of the culture change,” said Coach Gonzales. “The teams we are going up against in this district have a high standard. They have an established culture. It is a level that we are striving to get to. However that can’t be done in one season. We have to do it brick by brick.

“We accomplished some small victories this season that didn’t translate in our game scores or overall record, but in the long run, these things are going to start to pay off,” said Gonzales.

Lockhart dominated the game statistics.

The Lions amassed 28 first downs and 582 total yards against the Coyotes.

Uvalde had one of its least productive games of the season on offense with only 10 first downs and 197 total yards.

Lockhart had 61 rushing plays for 530 yards. They also completed five passes for 52 yards.

Uvalde rushed 11 times for 37 yards and completed 14 passes for 160 yards.

The Coyotes turned the ball over twice on pass interceptions.

They muffed one punt with a high snap from center and were unable to convert on a fake punt later in the game.

Lockhart lost the ball only once on a fumble.
