Coyotes start second practice week

Uvaldeans play at Del Rio Saturday

For the first time this football season, the Uvalde Coyotes will practice in full pads when they hit the practice field tomorrow.

From 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., the freshmen will practice, while the varsity and junior varsity will practice from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

This past week, Coach R.T. Gonzales’ Coyotes went through the first week of practice wearing helmets, T-shirts and shorts.

Coach Gonzales is pleased by the first week of workouts.

“The practices have gone well. The kids and our coaches have been focused and working at a really good pace,” said Gonzales. “We hope to continue to progress in the same manner as we begin our second week of practice Monday.”

Following tomorrow’s morning practice session, the freshmen will continue to workout from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The varsity and junior varsity will go to afternoon workouts, beginning Tuesday.

They will practice from 4:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

On Friday, all three UHS teams will practice at the same time, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Friday, the Coyotes will put on their football blitz fundraiser.

They will be selling Coyote cards, at a cost of $10 each. The card offers the buyer a chance to purchase food and other services from area businesses as a discounted price.

The Coyotes will see their first football competition of the season Saturday morning at Del Rio.

They will take on the Del Rio Rams in Del Rio’s Walter Levermann Stadium.

At 10 a.m., the varsity teams will begin play.

Preceding the varsity action will be scrimmage action for the UHS junior varsity team and freshman team, starting at 9 a.m.

The Del Rio Rams are a pre-season pick to finish seventh in the District 29-6A football race this year.

But Coach French McCrea’s Rams hope to challenge Eagle Pass and one of three Laredo schools for a post-season playoff spot.

The Rams return 16 lettermen from a team that posted a 2-8 record last football season.

Del Rio’s lone two wins last season came over Laredo LBJ, 14-13, and South San, 45-20.

Topping their list of returning personnel are linebacker Kyle Smith, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior; quarterback Guy Creamer, a 6-foot-2, 160-pound senior; and defensive end Carlos Nandin, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior.

With the start of school on Aug. 20, the varsity and junior varsity Coyotes will practice from 7 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. each day, while practices for the freshmen will run from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The Coyotes will wind up their pre-season workouts with a scrimmage against the Hondo Owls scheduled for Aug. 23 on Hondo’s Barry Field.

Varsity action will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be preceded by sub-varsity play at 5 p.m.

Hondo is a pre-season pick to challenge the Crystal City Javelinas for District 14-4A Division II championship honors.

The Owls return 15 lettermen from last year’s team that knocked off the District 14-4A Division II champion Pearsall Mavericks, 26-18, in bi-district competition.

The varsity Coyotes will kick off their regular-season schedule on Aug. 31 against the Eagle Pass Eagles in the Honey Bowl.

That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

On Aug. 30, the UHS junior varsity will play at Eagle Pass, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The UHS freshmen will host Eagle Pass for action in the Honey Bowl on Aug. 30, starting at 5 p.m.

Eagle Pass is a pre-season pick to challenge Laredo United and Laredo Alexander for the top spot in this year’s District 29-6A football race.
