Coyotes scrimmage Hondo Thursday

The Uvalde Coyotes will top off their second week of pre-season football workouts on Thursday with a football scrimmage against the Hondo Owls in the Honey Bowl.

The varsity teams will scrimmage at 6:30 p.m., while the sub-varsity teams will meet at 5 p.m.

For the varsity Coyotes and the junior varsity Coyotes, the Hondo scrimmage will be their only pre-season action prior to the start of the regular season.

The Coyotes participated in spring football back in May and under University Interscholastic League rules, they are eligible to play only one scrimmage contest.

Because of spring football, the varsity and junior varsity Coyotes began their fall workouts one week later under UIL rules.

Hondo will enter the action against the Coyotes Thursday night coming off a Friday night scrimmage against the Pleasanton Eagles at Pleasanton.

They began their football workouts one week earlier than the Coyotes.

Coach Brett Ratliff’s Owls are a pre-season pick to win the District 14-5A Division II football title this season.

Last year, the Owls finished in a three-way tie with the Crystal City Javelinas and the Devine Warhorses for first place in the district race.

The Owls lost a 21-14 over-time decision against the Llano Yellowjackets in bi-district competition.

Hondo lists 17 returning lettermen from last season’s 6-5 ball club, including 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior running back Trey Dickens, who rushed for 860 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.

One week from Thursday, Coach R.T. Gonzales’ Coyotes will kick off their regular-season football schedule when they play the Eagle Pass Eagles at Eagle Pass.

Action in Cozel Foster Memorial Stadium will begin at 7 p.m.

The Eagles are a pre-season pick to challenge Laredo United and Laredo Alexander for top football honors in District 29-6A.

Last season, the Eagles finished third behind United and Alexander in the district race.

Eagle Pass recorded a 34-28 bi-district victory over the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Bears in bi-district, but then lost a 38-13 decision to the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles in second-round playoff action.

The Eagles return 23 lettermen from last year’s 9-3 team.

Running back Saul Perales, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior, returns to lead the offensive attack.

Three weeks from tomorrow, the Coyotes will make their regular-season home debut when they take on the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks in the Honey Bowl.

Kick-off time for that game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Winn is a pre-season pick to challenge the San Antonio Harlan Hawks and the Southwest Dragons for top honors in the District 14-5A Division I football race.

Last year, the Mavs and Harlandale each posted a 3-3 district record, but the Indians topped Winn, 27-16, in head-to-head district competition.

With the tie-breaker advantage, Harlandale claimed fourth place.

The Mavs return 26 lettermen from last year’s 6-4 ball club, including quarterback Ethan Johnston, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior.

Johnston led the Mavericks in rushing last year.

Uvalde High School’s junior varsity team and freshmen will begin their regular season on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Honey Bowl.

Because the varsity teams are playing on a Thursday night, the Uvalde and Eagle Pass sub-varsity teams will play the night before.

This will be the first Wednesday night football game in the history of Uvalde High School.

The Uvalde-Eagle Pass freshman game is set to begin at 5 p.m., while the junior varsity teams will do battle starting at 7 p.m.

Because the UHS freshmen did not participate in spring ball, they were eligible play two pre-season scrimmages.

They will come into the Hondo scrimmage following a scrimmage against the Natalia Mustangs junior varsity that was to be played Friday night at Brackettville.
