Veterans Memorial sweeps 5A regional baseball series


The Veterans Memorial Eagles completed a baseball series sweep of the Kerrville Tivy Antlers as they posted a 6-1 victory in Class 5A Region IV championship action Saturday at Corpus Christi’s Whataburger Field.

With four runs in the fourth inning, the Eagles broke open what had been a scoreless contest.

M.J. Rodriguez began VM’s scoring surge as he beat out an infield single.

Jesus Rodriguez singled to right field to plate the game’s first run.

Jeffrey Boggess tripled to drive in a run.

Later in the inning, Jaythen Luna and Kobe Andrade each had a run-scoring single.

Tivy’s lone run came in the top half of the fifth inning as Milan Walla hit a sacrifice fly.

Daylen Peña hit a solo home run in VM’s part of the fifth inning.

The Eagles scored an additional run to take a 6-1 lead and then blanked the Antlers over the final two innings.

Tivy had some early scoring opportunities as they collected eight hits and placed runners in scoring position during the first five innings.

The Antlers wound up stranding a total of six base runner.

They had four base runners thrown out, including one in each of the first two innings.

In the third inning, VM catcher threw out a Tivy runner trying to advance from second to third base on a strike-them-out, throw-them out double play.

Jo Jo Villarreal was the winning pitcher.

Daylan Peña and Jeffrey Boggess each posted two hits to top VM’s offensive attack.

The Eagles topped the Antlers, 7-3, in the series opener played last Thursday night at Dripping Springs.
