UHS girls make district home debut

The Uvalde Lobos will play their first home basketball game of 2018 Tuesday when they make their District 29-5A home debut against the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks.

Action in the varsity game in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Preceding that game will be a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest.

The freshman teams will do battle beginning at 5 p.m. in UHS’s Oscar Cruz Gym.

Coach Gisel Mireles’ Lobos, 4-19 for the season, were scheduled to play the McCollum Cowboys in their district opener Friday at San Antonio.

Results from that contest will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

“We have played a tough pre-district schedule. The Lobos have gone up against some really good teams,” said Coach Mireles. “Hopefully, the teams we have played have prepared us for the start of district competition.”

Last Tuesday night, the Lobos ended the pre-district portion of their schedule with a 50-41 road loss to the Crystal City Javelinas.

The Lobos got off to a 27-22 lead in the first half, but they were outscored, 28-14, in the second half.

Deandra Vera and Alyssa Rodriguez topped the scoring for the Lobos with 19 points and 16 points, respectively.

Zaneta Salazar recorded four points, while Nataly Santos posted two points.

Before the Christmas/New Year’s holiday break, the Lobos posted a 43-41 overtime victory over the Fredericksburg Lady Battlin’ Billies.

Alyssa Rodriguez racked up 30 points to lead Uvalde’s scoring.

The others scoring for the Lobos were Deandra Vera with six points, Kaitlyn Willemin with three points, and Zaneta Salazar and Kylie Sendejo each with two points.

Mia Torres scored 14 points to lead Fredericksburg’s individual scoring.

Coach Paulo Valero’s Lady Mavericks have won 10 games this season.

Winn has recorded hoops victories over Dilley, Somerset, Poteet, Sharyland, Mission, San Antonio Harlan, Carrizo Springs twice, La Pryor and McAllen.

One of Winn’s losses came in a narrow 43-38 decision against the Crystal City girls.

Del Rio edged the Winn girls in a 46-43 thriller.

The Lady Mavs will come into action against the Lobos following their district opener against the Floresville Jaguars Friday night at Eagle Pass.

Results from the Winn-Floresville ball game were not available at presstime.

Some of the standout players for Winn this season include Silvy Salazar, Destiny Sukue, Gyselle Rangel and Ashley Cruz.

Salazar scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Winn’s individual stats against Edinburg Vela in recent McAllen tournament action.

Following action Tuesday, the Uvalde girls will be right back in Kinchlow Gym on Friday night to host the defending district champion Southside Lady Cardinals.

The varsity game will get underway at 6:30 p.m., while both sub-varsity games will start at 5 p.m.

Coach Jessica Cardenas’ Lady Cardinals, 18-3 for the season, entered district play as the favorites to repeat as district champions.

They will face the Floresville Jaguars at Floresivlle Tuesday before playing the Lobos on Friday night.

The Lady Cards were scheduled to open district play at home against the San Antonio Harlandale Indians Friday night.

The Southside girls went into their district opener riding a eight-game winning streak.

Their lone losses this season have come against South San, 56-53, Sam Houston, 69-49, and MacArthur, 58-50.

Southside is led by the play of guard Desirae Arocha, a 5-foot-7 senior, post Dominique Ramos, a 5-foot-8 senior, guard Marcelina Lopez, a 5-foot-3 senior, and forward Madeline Soto, a 5-foot-8 freshman.

The Lobos will go back on the road to face the Harlandale Indians on Jan. 16 at San Antonio.

On Jan. 23, the Lobos will celebrate Parents’ Night with a special ceremony honoring the parents of UHS basketball players prior to the start of the Uvalde-McCollum basketball game in Kinchlow Gym.

Prior to that game, the Lobos will host Floresville on Jan. 19.

Three of Uvalde’s final four district games will be on the road, including Winn, Southside, and Floresville.

The Lobos will host the Harlandale Indians on Feb. 2.
