Sub-varsity teams battle Southside


Uvalde High School will face the Southside Cardinals in sub-varsity football competition tonight.

The freshman Coyotes will play the Cardinals in the Honey Bowl tonight, while the Coyotes junior varsity will take on Southside’s junior varsity at Southside.

Both games are scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Last Thursday night, the UHS freshmen, 2-0-1 for the season, beat the Carrizo Springs junior varsity in a 26-20 thriller played in the Honey Bowl.

“I am happy and proud that we were able to find a way to win a tough game,” said UHS freshman football coach Jimmy Fly. “We are learning more and more every day, but we still have a ways to go.”

The young Coyotes rolled up 15 first downs and 256 total yards.

Quarterback Donovan Davila threw three touchdown passes to Christian Rivera, while Rudy Cantu ran for a touchdown.

Defensively, the Coyotes held Carrizo’s jayvee to 10 first downs and 179 yards.

Some of the defensive standouts were Jacob Alvarado, Diego Gonzalez, Frank Alvarez, Cesar Mendiola, Fabian Longoria, and Rudy Cantu.

Uvalde’s junior varsity team, 2-1 for the season, recorded a 27-0 shutout over the Rocksprings Angoras last Thursday at Rocksprings.

Scoring information and statistical data from that game was not available.

Following action tonight, the Coyotes will face the Gonzales Apaches in sub-varsity games set for next Thursday.

The Uvalde freshmen will host Gonzales, while the Uvalde junior varsity team will go on the road to play at Gonzales.

Both of those games are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
