Veronica Canales

Veronica Canales

Veronica Canales, 49, of Batesville died on March 23, 2020, at her residence.

A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. at Batesville Cemetery with the Rev. Sonny Flores officiating.

Canales was born on Sept. 18, 1970, in Galveston to Herlinda Rubio Canales.

She was employed with the Zavala County Nutrition Center in Batesville for the past five years, through which she enjoyed serving the senior citizens of the community.

She was a member of Templo La Hermosa in Batesville.

Canales, known to most as Ronnie, was the second oldest of five siblings, thus she continuously chaperoned and chauffeured her siblings from their teen years throughout recent times. She was always up for an adventure, even traveling to visit family and tour the state in her final weeks. She loved music and camaraderie, doting on her brothers, sisters, and cousins.

When she became an aunt, her nurturing trait flourished even more, until it was perfectly honed by the time she gave birth to her own child, son Roel, nine years ago. She relished their life together, proudly serving him grand breakfasts on their leisurely weekends and indulging him with trips to the movie theatre, zoo, or wherever else their hearts desired.

She was an avid coupon clipper, sharing tips for bargain hunting with her family and friends. Despite her giving nature, she was reluctant to share her family’s often-requested enchilada recipe – knowing the recipient’s version wouldn’t have the same magic – although she was happy to serve up a pan upon request.

Fellow bakers knew not to bring a pineapple upside down cake to a fundraiser Ronnie was also baking for, and it was sacrilege to slice her cakes for individual sale.

She is survived by her mother, of Batesville; son, Roel Thomas Canales of Batesville; two brothers, Alexander Canales and wife, Rosalinda, of Uvalde, and Jesus A. Canales and wife, Jenny Lynne, of Ft. Hood; two sisters, Venessa Luna and husband, Larry, and Clarissa Rubio, all of Batesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Irene Cuellar, and paternal grandparents Guadalupe G. Canales and Thomas Canales Sr.; and two uncles, Jose Rubio and Eugene Rubio.

Pallbearers will be Estevan Ortega, Victor Lopez Sr., Julian Sanchez III, Francisco Javier Luna, Pete Luna and Eduardo Angulo. Honorary pallbearers will be Jesus A. Canales, Jo Ed Luna, Daniel C. Luna and Eli Herrera.
