Bill McWhorter

Murray William McWhorter, known to many as Billy Mc, of Uvalde died on Dec. 8, 2019, in Uvalde.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Uvalde, where he served on various committees and as a Sunday school teacher.

He was born in Austin on Sept. 12, 1942, to Julia (Franzetti) and Murray McWhorter.

He graduated from Austin High School in 1960. McWhorter played golf while pursuing a college degree and later served in the military for two years.

He married Janice Winans in Dallas on Sept. 28, 1968.

Making their home in Uvalde, McWhorter became a significant part of the community, serving as mayor for four years. For over 40 years, he was a major influence at Gensco and Uvalco pipe, where he will be missed by staff and customers alike.

McWhorter is survived by his wife of 51 years, of Uvalde; two daughters, Audrey Walters and husband, Kurt, of Golden, Colorado, and Meredith Hunter and fiancé, Andre Plaza, of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Madeline, Jack, and Drew Walters of Golden, Colorado, and Grant and Claire Hunter of San Antonio; sister Judy Friess and husband, John Paul, of Sonora; and brother in-law David Bessire of Aledo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A funeral service was held yesterday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Uvalde. Interment is pending at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Pallbearers will be Bob Willoughby, Charlie Griffin, Jack Baum, Bob Brandes, Robert Hundley, Roger Treviño, Gary Ferguson and Robert White.
