Multi-city sale well attended

Uvalde was a significant stop during the annual 100-mile Hotter than Hell yard sale hosted last weekend along Highway 90.

Debra Stifflemire, event organizer and executive director of Uvalde Convention and Visitors Bureau, said she didn’t have a lot of direct involvement with the annual event due to her duties with the Soaring Society of America’s 18 Meter Nationals competition being staged at Garner Field Airport.

Rule breakers, mess makers cause issues

She said she has heard great success stories about vendors who sold out before the weekend was over – El Progreso Memorial Library had much success – while on the flip side, there were problems with people not following rules.

“I will say here in front of the civic center we are still having problems with people moving the barricades and parking where they are asked not to,” she said. “We had an incident of someone trying to use a barbecue pit, and that isn’t allowed.”

Stifflemire said those at the civic center, which shares property with the CVB office, try their best to secure the area for everyone’s safety.

“The [Uvalde] Police Department was very helpful in trying to make sure rules were being followed,” Stifflemire said, “but again, it is hard since we can’t be there full time.”

One option she’s looking toward for next year is the possibility of having vendors reserve spaces.

“But again, if we don’t have staff manning the area full time, people will do what they want,” she said.

Nonetheless, some changes may be a reality next year.

“The civic center rules we try to enforce are not being followed,” Stifflemire said.

“Trash was an issue after the event was over as well.

“I am not happy with the misuse of the area here in our yard or the civic center,” she said. “But I haven’t had a chance to visit with the city, so I am not sure about changes for next year.”
