Kinney County deputy dies on job

Kinney County Sheriff’s Deputy Jose Luis Blancarte, 46, suffered a fatal heart attack Friday while on duty. He began to feel unwell in the 100-degree heat as he was directing traffic at the scene of a vehicle fire on Highway 90, approximately 4 miles west of Brackettville.

Blancarte contacted Emergency Medical Services personnel who were also at the fire scene.

As he was being transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center he became unresponsive. Paramedics performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

He was a 20-year veteran of the Kinney County Sheriff’s Office, and he had obtained a Master Peace Officer certification on June 8, 2019.

Blancarte is survived by his wife, Amalia Blancarte; four children; his mother; and six siblings.

A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center in the Red Oak Room, 1915 Veterans Boulevard. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Del Rio.
