Pastor’s Column: Pray for patience

During this Covid-19 response, I have found myself quite frustrated. I tend to be a “follow the rules” kind of person. I do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. I have not avoided “wrong doing” because of fear of punishment, I do the right thing because that is the way I was raised. Follow the rules! So I do. That has served me well in life. In family, school, sports, my different jobs, a career in law enforcement, college, seminary, as a pastor, I follow the rules.
Now in the days of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have rules to follow, guidelines to strive for, people to interact with, in a whole different way. Sometimes I feel there is no end in sight. So I have spent a great deal of time in prayer, and my biggest request in my prayer time is for patience. I pray that we can have the patience to stay safe, that we wait for the vaccine, that I can still wear my mask when it seems that no one else will, that I will keep my distance. Please God, help me wait!
After my prayer time, I feel a sense of peace that the Holy Spirit provides, so I can go another day, safely, and live not only in the hope that the virus will clear and we can find a new normal, but also enjoy the peace of being loved by a God that gives us eternal life through Jesus! Peace be with you.
