Letter to editor: More than winning

This letter is in response to the letter “Coyote Tough” (Sunday, Aug. 25) as was written by an individual that probably never was a coach in any respect; otherwise this would have never been written in the first place. The athletic director did not mean anything near what the writer misinterpreted when he said “We will row the boat because that is what we do.”

It did not mean that the Coyotes will just roll over and get pounded because we are in a tougher district. If you have witnessed a practice or the scrimmage on Wednesday, Aug. 21, you would be able to agree that the AD and his coaches are doing their jobs. AD and his staff have definitely found talent and placed correctly in position.

I agree that having a winning season in any sport would be ideal for everyone involved as it brings pride to the players and to the community. Unfortunately, that is not the case in any sport. There is much more at stake than just a winning season; AD and his coaches are also teaching and mentoring these young men.

They teach them about discipline, perseverance, facing adversity, values and morals to become better men and thus be contributors to our community and society in a positive way. Never has the AD or any of his assistant coaches ever uttered any words to suggest “that others are stronger/tougher than you” to any Coyotes or Lobos in this school district. It is time for this individual to stop being so negative towards UCISD. I have read his previous letters to the editor. My opinion is that this man has a personal vendetta towards the school, more like hatred for that matter.

In his opinion, he suggests that the AD be replaced. Well, sometimes we in our community have to deal with persons that dish out negativity every time they open their mouth or put pen to paper. Do we get to replace them? No!

We will row the boat because that is what we do.
