Filing opened yesterday for prospective candidates for the 2020 spring party primaries. The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is Monday, Dec. 9.
The last day to register to vote in the March 3, 2020, primary election is Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. Early voting will be conducted Feb. 18-28, 2020.
The last day to apply for a ballot by mail is Friday, Feb. 21, 2020. Applications must be received by the Uvalde County elections official by that date.
The runoff election, if required for any races, will be conducted Tuesday, May 26, 2020.
The general election is set Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.
The Uvalde Leader-News provides an opportunity for each political candidate to announce his or her candidacy one time, free of charge, as a news story. Additional announcements or commentary will be not be considered news and must be paid political advertising that will appear elsewhere in the newspaper.
Where the free announcement appears in the newspaper will be based on the nature of the race.
Political endorsements must be paid advertisements and are not considered news stories.
Letters to the editor concerning political candidates will not be permitted once early voting begins.
Early voting for the Spring 2020 primary elections will begin Tuesday, Feb. 18, so free political announcements will not be published later than the Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.
Political rallies or fundraisers will not be covered as news stories, unless the event involves candidates from both parties or multiple candidates from the same party seeking the same seat.
Candidates for statewide office who visit the Uvalde Leader-News office will receive the equivalent of an announcement story. Subsequent visits will not be covered as news.
