Vara heads to state lifting meet

Gavin Vara has not been powerlifting for a long period of time, but he has made a quick rise to the top of the sport.

Saturday at Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center, Vara will represent Uvalde High School in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state powerlifting meet.

Meet competition will get underway at 9 a.m.

Vara, a UHS senior, will compete in the Boys’ 181-pound weight class.

This is only the second year of powerlifting competition for Vara.

“I began lifting last year as a junior,” said Vara. “I really like the sport.

“Powerlifting gives me a chance to push myself physically and mentally,” said Vara. “It takes a lot of physical strength to lift the weights, but it really takes a lot of mental strength, as well. I like the challenge.”
