UHS wins 28-5A tennis championship


Uvalde High School nailed down another district team tennis title as the Coyotes and Lobos beat the Medina Valley Panthers, 14-3, in District 28-5A action Thursday at the Terri Rambie Tennis Complex.

With the team victory, the UHS boys and girls completed district play with a perfect 7-0 record.

The Uvaldeans won six of the seven doubles matches and eight of the 10 singles matches.

Andrew Melchor and Beau Gonzalez were victorious in the boys’ number-one doubles match.

They defeated Jose Rodriguez and William Tschirhart, 6-2 and 6-1.

Ricardo Moreno and Juan Melchor rallied to win a split-set decision over Garrett Kanak and Maverick Luesman in the number-two match.

After losing a 6-3 decision in the first set, they battled back to win the second two sets by scores of 6-1 and 10-7.

Jack Brock and Colton Gaston bested Max Leal and Nickole Essary, 6-2 and 6-3, in the number-three match.

Kezia Rodriguez and Briana Amor whipped Tessa Guzman and Maddie Villarreal, 6-3 and 6-3, in the girls’ doubles number-one match.

Crystal Mason and Arlin Morales were 6-2 and 6-3 winners over Madeline Pryzylska and Ameenah Wilson in the number-two match.

Elizaria Hernandez and Marilyn Torres beat Hannah Tschirhart and Dani Lara, 6-0, in the first set of the number three match.

They lost a 6-4 verdict in the second set, but then won the third set, 10-6.

Andrew Melchor defeated Tyler Oberherder, 6-2 and 6-3, in the boys’ singles number-one match.

Beau Gonzalez crushed Jose Rodriguez, 6-2 and 6-1, in the number-two match, and Ty Gonzalez hammered Garrett Kanak, 6-4 and 6-0, in the number-three match.

Colton Gaston throttled Max Leal, 6-1 and 6-1, in the fifth match, while Jack Brown outlasted his opponents, 7-5 and 6-4, in the sixth match.

Crystal Mason won the girls’ singles number-two match with a 6-2, 1-6, and 10-8 split-set victory over Tessa Guzman.

Arlin Morales won the third match, while Elizaria Hernandez won the sixth match.

Morales topped Maddie Villarreal, 6-4 and 6-4, and Hernandez walloped Madeline Pryzylska, 6-1 and 6-0.

UHS head coach Terri Rambie and assistant coach Eric Mahler were pleased by their team’s performance against MV.

The Coyotes and the Lobos are the District 28-5A team tennis champions for the 2019 season.

One week from tomorrow, the Uvaldeans will face a team from District 27-5A in team tennis bi-district playoff competition.

The dual-team match will be conducted at San Antonio’s MacFarlin Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Uvalde’s opponent for the bi-district match has yet to be determined.

UHS dominated junior varsity play against MV Thursday afternoon.

Singles winners for Uvalde were Joel Zamarripa, Rene Garcia, Damian Weigand, Ben Morales, Gilbert Garza, Angel Lopez, Rey Cruz, Simon Alvarez, Elizabeth Amaya, Ariana Vasquez, Alexia Quijano, Belinda Puente, Joana Reyes, Alexandra Maldonado, Alice Chum, Sadey Rendon, Katelyn Causey, Julianna Gutierrez, Madison McCollough and Vellsea Garza.

Doubles winners included the teams of Zamarripa and Garcia, Weigand and Morales, Garza and Lopez, Amaya and Vasquez, Quijano and Puente, Reyes and Maldonado, Alvarez and Rendon, and Causey and McCollough.
