Two wrecks, five people hospitalized

Five people were hospitalized, including a 1-year-old child, Thursday following two separate vehicle collisions that occurred 30 minutes apart.

Uvalde Police were first dispatched at 3:02 p.m. to a two-vehicle wreck in the 1800 block of Garner Field Road.

According to police, the wreck occurred as Ricardo Contreras was traveling east on the roadway in a 2017 Ford F-150 and Judy Gonzales was traveling west in a 1999 Honda Accord.

“Contreras struck her head-on,” said Lt. Mariano Pargas. “He said he fell asleep and drove into oncoming traffic.”

Contreras was taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital via Uvalde EMS and Gonzales was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio. No citations were issued at the scene.

At approximately 3:32 p.m., police were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Ham Lane and East Main Street.
