The Coyotes are alone at the top

Uvaldeans win 29-5A showdown

The game Tuesday night at Marvin Kolinek Field was just what you would expect from two teams fighting for the district baseball title. It was a gem.

And the shiniest performance on the diamond was turned in by pitcher Michael Mata, who tossed a five-hit shutout to help lead the Uvalde Coyotes to a 1-0 victory over the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys.

The Coyotes scored the lone run of the game in the first inning.

Jacob Treviño drew a lead-off walk.

One out later, Matt Sandoval lined a single down the right field foul line.

On Sandoval’s single, Treviño advanced all the way to third base.

Tito Garza hit a high fly ball to left center field.

Treviño tagged up on and scored from third base on Garza’s sacrifice fly.

That one run was all that Michael Mata needed as he pitched a shutout.

McCollum’s best opportunity to score came in the third inning as they put three runners on base with no outs.

Nathaniel Tapia walked, Geonie Vasquez reached base on an error, and Mark Villarreal made it to base on a bunt single.

With the bases loaded and no outs, the Coyotes executed a double play.

Michael Mata fielded a ground ball to the mound, flipped the ball to catcher Tito Garza, who stepped on home plate for the first out.

Garza then fired the ball to first baseman Matt Sandoval for a put out on batter Adam Banda to complete the double play.

Mata then struck out McCollum’s top hitter Johnny Garza to end the scoring threat.

McCollum advanced a base runner to second base in both the fifth inning and the six inning, but Mata struck out a batter to end each inning.

In the first inning, right fielder Marcus De La Cruz fielded a single and made a long throw to third baseman Roy Resma, who tagged out a McCollum runner at third base for the third out of the inning.

The Coyotes had several chances to add to their one-run lead, but they were not able to come up with a timely hit with a base runner in scoring position.

They left a runner on base in the second inning and third inning.

The Coyotes left the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, the Coyotes left a runner on base and two Uvalde base runners were left on base in the sixth inning.

The Coyotes stranded a total of nine runners on base through the course of the ball game.

With the victory, Coach Ricky Salazar’s Coyotes claimed sole possession of first place in the District 29-5A standings.

They now have a district record of 7-2, while their season record is 15-9-1.

McCollum and San Antonio Harlandale are tied for second place with 6-3 district records.

With the win, the Coyotes swept their two-game district series against McCollum. Earlier in the month, they downed the Cowboys, 5-4, at San Antonio.

The Coyotes finished the ball game with a 7-5 hitting advantage over McCollum.

Matt Sandoval and Jordan Ortiz each collected two singles, while Jacob Treviño, Joel Treviño and Joey Valerio each singled.
