SWTJC hoops event begins today

Nueces Canyon and Knippa will be the first two schools to tip off play in the 60th-annual Southwest Texas Junior College Invitational high school basketball tournament today in La Forge Hall Gym.

At 8:30 a.m., the Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers will battle the Knippa Lady Rockcrushers in the first girls’ game of the tourney.

Under the original tourney schedule, the Nueces Canyon Panthers were to play the Knippa Rockcrushers in the first boys’ game of this year’s event, but Nueces Canyon pulled out of the tournament.

According to SWTJC tournament director Landra Fowler, she received an email from Nueces Canyon officials last Saturday.

In the email, Nueces Canyon notified Fowler that they were withdrawing from the tourney because of injuries sustained by several players in their six-man football playoff game at Fredericksburg last Friday night.

Fowler said that Canyon said they did not have enough players to play in the tournament.

La Pryor’s junior varsity will fill the spot left vacant by Nueces Canyon’s exit from the tourney.

The Knippa girls are the defending girls’ tourney champions.
