Several Uvalde High School students and their supervising teacher work daily to keep a little downtown business in operation. The Candle Shop, located at 313 N. Getty, has been open for more than 40 years.
“Still, a lot of people don’t even know that we exist,” noted Brenda Mueller. Mueller has been the teacher assigned to the shop for the last three years.
“It was started about 40 years ago by Janey Briscoe. She started it, to my knowledge, because she had a friend (who was disabled) who needed some work. It was originally called the Janey Briscoe Sheltered Workshop. At that time, it was for adults – it wasn’t for teenagers,” Mueller said.
The shop operated like that for several years, then a co-op was formed and operated the shop for a time. It was shut down for a couple of years before the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District took over the building and operation of the shop.
