Mavs edge Coyotes in 21-20 thriller

The Uvalde Coyotes lost a 21-20 football thriller Friday night at Eagle Pass.

With 29 seconds left in the game, wide receiver Marcus De La Cruz caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Donovan Davila.

Going for what would have been the game-winning two-point conversion, the Coyotes went to the air, but their pass went incomplete.

“Our guys fought hard. With the touchdown, we had momentum. We believe in our guys and, with this being a non-district game, we went for the win. It’s a good way to prepare for district,” said Uvalde High School head football coach R.T. Gonzales.

“Nine out of 10 times, we will go for it in a situation like this because we have confidence in our kids,” said Gonzales. “I am proud of how hard our kids fought throughout this ball game.”

The Coyotes got off to a strong start in the football contest.

Early on, the Coyotes thwarted a fake punt.
