UHS girls soar past the Rockets
The Uvalde Lobos opened their volleyball season on a winning note Tuesday afternoon as they downed the San Antonio Kennedy Rockets.
Playing before a small, but enthusiastic crowd of fans in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Lobos posted a 25-22, 16-25, 26-24, and 25-21 over the Rockets.
“We have a young , varsity-inexperienced team. You could see that in our play in this match,” said UHS head volleyball coach Russell McElroy.
“After winning the first game, we lost a little adrenaline and were a little flat in the second game,” said McElroy. “But the girls bounced back in game three. That helped our momentum and confidence.
“In the fourth game, we battled back and maintained the energy we needed to win,” said McElroy. “Getting that first match under our belt was important, but getting the win to go along with it was awesome.”
In a see-saw battle that featured a lot of ups and downs, the two teams split their first two games.
With the score knotted at 18-18, the Lobos outscored the Rockets, 7-4, down the stretch to win the first game.
