Lobos play Harlan girls tomorrow


Tomorrow night in Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Uvalde Lobos will play their final basketball game prior to the Christmas holiday break.

The Lobos will host the San Antonio Harlan Hawks in District 28-5A hoops competition.

Varsity game tip-off time is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m., while both sub-varsity games will begin at 5 p.m.

John Marshall Harlan High School’s girls are off to a 3-1 start in district play and a 12-7 season basketball record.

Tuesday night, the Hawks defeated the Southside Lady Cardinals, 38-29, in action at Harlan High School.

Jaisa Morris, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, and Nicole Nash, a 5-foot-2 senior guard, led Harlan’s scoring with 15 points and 12 points, respectively.

Last Friday night, the Hawks lost a 47-45 district heartbreaker in road action against the Floresville Jaguars.

Prior to that game, the Hawks began district play with back-to-back wins over Eagle Pass Winn, 41-36, and Somerset, 54-44.

The Hawks currently are tied with Somerset for second place in the District 28-5A girls’s basketball standings.

Coach Gisel Mireles’ Lobos, 0-4 in district competition, lost a 55-40 decision to the Southwest Dragons in district competition at Southwest Tuesday night.

Details from the contest and individual scoring statistics from that ball game were not available at presstime.

Last Friday night, the Lobos lost a 60-36 verdict against the Southwest Legacy Titans.

The Lobos got off to a strong start in the contest as they outscored the Titans, 7-2, during the first period.

Alyssa Rodriguez netted a three-point field goal, Shyann Dockal downed a short-range field goal, and Nataly Sanchez scored on a layup following a pass from Dockal.

Rodriguez began the second period with a short-range field goal to extend the Uvalde lead to 9-2.

But after that, Legacy caught offensive fire as they outscored the Lobos, 23-7, during the final six and a half minutes of the first half to take a 25-16 half-time lead.

The Titans extended their lead to 40-27 in the third period and then blew the game open with a 20-9 scoring binge in the final period of competition.

Ashley Corpus, who hit on five three-point field goals, wound up as the scoring leader for Legacy with 26 points.

Alyssa Renteria also scored in double figures for the Titans with 13 points.

Alyssa Rodriguez was the scoring leader for the Lobos with 13 points.

Others scoring for UHS included A’Taisha Carroll with eight points, Rayleigh Watson and Nataly Santos each with four points, Gisselle Martinez with three points, and Shyann Dockal and Tina Guedea each with two points.

The Lobos will be trying to snap a seven-game losing streak when they play Harlan tomorrow night.

After the Christmas break, the UHS girls will play the Winn Lady Mavericks at Eagle Pass on Dec. 29.

The varsity game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff, while the sub-varsity games will start at noon.

On Jan. 2, the Lobos will begin 2019 with a home matchup against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs.

Varsity action in Kinchlow Gym will start at 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will start at 5 p.m.

They will close out the first half of their grueling 16-game district basketball schedule with a road game against Floresville set for Jan. 5.

The Lobos will start the second half of district play with a home game against Southside on Jan. 8.

District hoops action for the Lobos will continue through Feb. 5 when the Uvalde girls host the Floresville Jaguars in their final game of the season.
