Varsity competition begins at 6:30
Tomorrow night in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Uvalde Lobos will be seeking their first District 28-5A basketball victory of the season as they host the Floresville Jaguars.
Tip-off time for the varsity game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Preceding that game will be a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest, while the freshman teams will battle at 5 p.m. in UHS’s Oscar Cruz Gym.
Coach Danielle Gonzales’ Jaguars, 3-4 in district play and 10-15 for the season, snapped an eight-game losing streak with their 41-24 win over the Southside Lady Cardinals Tuesday night.
Guard Mariah Rodriguez, a 5-foot-4 senior, and center Karen Lopez, a 5-foot-8 senior, each scored 11 points to lead Floresville’s scoring attack.
Madison Clark, a 5-foot-5 senior guard, totaled nine points for the Jaguars.
Southside did not place a scorer in double figures, but Maddie Soto led the Cards with nine points.
Prior to their win over Southside, the Floresville girls were defeated, 70-58, by the Somerset Lady Bulldogs.
Mariah Rodriguez, and Alexa Cantu, a 5-foot-4 junior guard, scored in double figures in Floresville’s loss to Somerset.
Rodriguez netted 19 points, while Cantu recorded 15 points.
In other action prior to the Southside game, the Floresville girls lost in district play against San Antonio Harlan, 72-51, and Eagle Pass Winn, 37-33, and in non-district game against Boerne Champion 55-34, New Braunfels Canyon, 57-34, Boerne High, 56-34, and New Braunfels, 61-48.
Earlier this season, the Jags won over Southwest Legacy, 71-65 in overtime, and Southwest, 50-30, while they lost to Medina Valley, 32-30.
Coach Fortino Patiño’s Lobos, 0-7 in district and 5-16 for the season, lost in road action, 47-30, against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs Tuesday.

Following action tomorrow night, the Lobos will begin the second half of district play Tuesday when they go on the road to battle the Southside Lady Cardinals.
One week from tomorrow, the Lobos have a district open date.
They will face the Medina Valley Panthers at Castroville on Jan. 21.
The Uvalde girls will play the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans in Uvalde on Jan. 24.
