For the second year in a row, the Uvalde Lobos ended their soccer season with a 1-0 bi-district loss to the Flour Bluff Hornets.
In Thursday night action at Southside High School, the lone goal of the playoff match came with 13:46 seconds left in the second half as Olivia Cerna clipped the side of the goal with a short-range shot after taking a pass from Alexa Barreda, who scored an assist.
“We gave their girl a little bit too much space and she got a shot in on us,” said Uvalde High School head soccer coach Russell McElroy.
The Hornets held off the Lobos through the remainder of the contest to post a hard-earned victory.
“I was proud of the way our girls came and played hard from start to finish. For the most part it was a well-played match by both teams,” said McElroy. “It is disappointing to see the season end, but our Lobos have had a great season.”
About nine minutes prior to Flour Bluff’s match-winning goal, the Lobos had a big opportunity to score as Arissa Perez made a long pass to Caryssa Mendoza, who attempted to make a header shot into the goal from close range, but her shot went awry.
