Lobos end hoops season Tuesday


UHS girls host Floresville Jaguars

The Uvalde Lobos will end their 2018-19 basketball season Tuesday night.

They will host the Floresville Jaguars in their season finale.

Tip-off time for the District 28-5A varsity game is set for 6:30 p.m. in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

At 5 p.m., the junior varsity teams and the freshman teams will do battle. The junior varsity game will precede the varsity game in Kinchlow Gym, while the freshman game will be played in UHS’s Oscar Cruz Gym.

Coach Gisel Mireles’ Lobos will celebrate UHS Seniors Night as senior members of the varsity basketball team will be honored, including Alyssa Rodriguez, Jasmine Lewallen, Aliyah Carrizales and Adriana Menchaca.

That recognition ceremony will take place prior to the varsity ball game.

Last month at Floresville, the Jaguars defeated the Lobos, 46-36, in the first district meeting between the two teams.

The Jags built up a 29-12 lead in the first half and held off a comeback bid by the Lobos in the second half to win the game.

Uvalde outscored the Floresville girls, 24-17, in the second half.

Alyssa Rodriguez netted 10 points to top the scoring for the Lobos against Floresville.

Others who scored for UHS were A’Taisha Carroll with eight points, Aliyah Carrizales with seven points, Rayleigh Watson with five points, Gisselle Martinez with four points, and Jasmine Lewallen with two points.

Three players scored 10 points for Floresville, including Brielee Daniell, Karen Lopez and Emma Salazar.

Coach Danielle Gonzales’ Jaguars, 8-6 in district competition and 14-17 for the season overall, will enter play following district road action at Southside Friday night.

Results from the Floresville-Southside game were not available.

Floresville went into play against the Lady Cardinals Friday night needing one more victory to clinch fourth-place in the district standings and a post-season playoff spot.

The Jaguars held a one-game lead over both the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks and the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans going into action Friday.

Winn was to host Medina Valley, while Legacy was to play at Harlan.

Coach Mireles’ Lobos were scheduled to play the Somerset Lady Bulldogs Friday at Somerset.

Results from the Uvalde-Somerset game will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

Last Tuesday night, the Winn girls downed the Lobos, 46-35, in action in Kinchlow Gym.

Alyssa Rodriguez led all individual scorers in the game. She netted 23 points for the Lobos.

Others scoring for Uvalde were Jasmine Lewallen with six points, A’Taisha Carroll with four points, and Shyann Dockal with two points.

Destiny Sukue and Andrea Aldape led Winn in scoring with 10 points and nine points, respectively.
