El Progreso Memorial Library garnered an estimated $6,500 Saturday from the It’s Magic! event held at the Janey Slaughter Briscoe Grand Opera House. As of Tuesday afternoon, the library was still in process of finalizing the amount.
The event was in two parts – a matinee and an evening showing. Put together, there were 400 audience members in attendance.
On sale were bottles of water, magic wands and tickets for a prize drawing, the proceeds of which benefited the library. One hundred percent of the general-admission ticket sales also went to the library.
“I am extremely pleased with the way the event turned out,” said library director Mendell Morgan. “I consider it a great success from every standpoint and aspect.”
The performers – five magicians and one comedian, all from the San Antonio area – greatly enjoyed the opera house as a venue, with both its historic setting and modern updates. The magicians were John Murphy, Michael Tallon, Paul Amerson, Don Moravits and Lupe Neaves. Chandra Murthy was the resident comedian.
