Six-year-old Giovanni Cano, a kindergartner at Dalton Early Childhood Center, died Sunday afternoon after a branch from an oak tree fell and struck his head in the 700 block of South High Street.

The incident occurred as he accompanied his 12-year-old cousin in a search for firewood. The hanging tree limb was reported to Uvalde Police Department’s dispatch center by a patrol officer earlier that same day. Another large branch fell Wednesday morning. The city has not yet said whether the tree will be removed.

“The family was having a cookout. The female child decided to gather sticks. She came upon the limb and pulled at it. She said she yelled at him to move out of the way, but he didn’t have enough time to move away,” said Uvalde Police Department Lt. Mariano Pargas, noting that the incident occurred on the roadway.
