Don’t mess with Castano: Flores student is yellow belt

Charley Robinson

Staff writer

Bullies best steer clear of at least one Flores Elementary School sixth-grader. Eleven-year-old Malachi Castano is currently ranked a yellow belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Malachi is entering his third year of training and competing in jiu-jitsu and has gained the reputation of one of the toughest kids to beat at tournaments.

Malachi lives in Uvalde with his mother, Erica Ortiz. He has lived here his entire life and was introduced to the sport as a baby by his father, Nick Castano, who resides in Carrizo Springs.
