Defense: Overmedication, trauma to blame for fatal crash

Whether a Concan-area crash that killed 13 senior members of the First Baptist Church of New Braunfels was the result of poor decisions or caused by an overly medicated victim of childhood sexual assault was discussed Wednesday during the first of a three-day sentencing hearing for defendant Jack D. Young.

The sole survivor on board the bus, Rose Harris, was present in the courtroom, along with dozens of family members of those who perished in the wreck.

Camile DuBose, 38th Judicial District Judge, is overseeing the case at the Uvalde County Courthouse. On May 31, Young pleaded no contest to 14 two-count indictments for the March 29, 2017, crash.

Charges included 13 counts of intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle and 13 counts of manslaughter, as well as one count of intoxicated assault with a vehicle and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
