De La Cruz tops as scholar, athlete

Uvalde High School senior Ryan “The Animal” De La Cruz has been selected as the Thursday Night Lights Scholar Athlete of the Week by San Antonio’s Fox 29. He wears the No. 7 jersey and is a safety for the Uvalde Coyotes.

De La Cruz has a 94.28 grade point average and ranks 23rd in his class.

“These are students who are not only excelling on the field but also in the classroom,” according to Fox 29.

He also plays baseball for Uvalde and volunteers as a counselor for the youth GetFIT program.

“I teach them about bullying, getting in shape and we take them on field trips,” said De La Cruz.

De La Cruz was recognized on Fox 29 as part of Thursday Night Lights, when the football contest between the Uvalde Coyotes and the Boerne Chargers was televised.

Anne Marie Espinoza, marketing and communications director for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, says this recognition also provides De La Cruz the opportunity to compete for scholarships. Other students recognized thus far include an athlete from Brennan High School and Marshall High School.
