Coyotes win hoops season opener

The Uvalde Coyotes were victorious in their first basketball game of the season.

Last Saturday afternoon, the Coyotes defeated the Bandera Bulldogs, 79-46, in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes got off to a 23-13 lead in the first period.

Cristian Treviño scored the first field goal of the season for the Coyotes.

He nailed a three-point field goal 15 seconds into the contest to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.

The Coyotes never relinquished their scoring lead.

Using good defense and superior rebounding, the Coyotes methodically built a 10-point advantage by the end of the quarter.

Up by a score of 8-7, the Coyotes outscored the Bulldogs, 15-6, during the last five minutes of the opening period of the ball game.

Grant Taylor scored off of an offensive rebound and Estevan Ortiz downed a layup to give the Coyotes a 12-7 lead.

Later in the period, Ryan De La Cruz converted on a three-point play to put UHS up 15-8.

D’Andre Carroll sank a short-range shot, Cristian Treviño scored off of a pass from Donovan Davila, and Estevan Ortiz drained a three-point field goal to extend the Uvalde scoring lead to 22-13.

Ortiz hit on a free throw to up the lead to 23-13 at the end of the period.

Bandera made a mini-comeback early in the second period as they cut the Uvalde lead to 25-17.

But the Uvaldeans then went on a 20-2 scoring binge to blow the ball game open.

D’Andre Carroll downed a three-point shot from the top of the key to begin Uvalde’s scoring run.

Grant Taylor scored off an assist from Donovan Davila and D’Andre Carroll scored off of an assist from Estevan Ortiz.

Later in the period, Ortiz and Ryan De La Cruz each sank a pair of free throws, before Tito Gonzalez scored off of an assist by Davila as the Coyotes upped their lead to 38-17.

The Coyotes outpointed the Bulldogs, 9-4, during the final three minutes of the half to increase the lead to 47-21.

Seven different players scored for the Coyotes in the third period as they continued to add to their scoring lead.

Eric Flores hit on back-to-back close-range shots to give the Coyotes a 66-31 lead late in the period.

Jose Luevanos scored off of an assist from Flores to put the Coyotes up, 71-33, by the end of the period.

The Coyotes coasted through the final period on the way to their first victory of the season.

Ten Coyotes contributed to Uvalde’s scoring total.

Four players scored in double figures, including Grant Taylor with 16 points, Cristian Treviño with 14 points, D’Andre Carroll with 12 points, and Estevan Ortiz with 10 points.

Tito Gonzalez and Eric Flores each scored six points, Ryan De La Cruz racked up five points, Jose Luevanos and Christian Rivera each put in four points, and Jackson Taylor made two points.

Donovan Davila, Derrick Amaya, Chris Hernandez, and Angel Flores saw playing time but they did not score.

Lukas Jackson tallied 18 points to lead the scoring for Bandera.
