Five Uvaldeans capture first place
Uvalde High School boys won five first-place medals en route to a first-place finish in the team standings of the UHS powerlifting meet held Feb. 2 in Harvey Kinchlow Gym.
Coach Frank Gonzales’ Coyotes totaled 53 points to finish far ahead of the meet runner-up Dilley Wolves, who placed second with 39 points.
Del Rio’s Rams wound up third with 36 points.
Gavin Vara had the best individual performance of the meet.
Competing in the boys’ 181-pound weight classification, Vara took first place with his total lift of 1,350 pounds.
Vara, who squatted 525 pounds, bench pressed 260 pounds, and dead lifted 565 pounds, won the best lifter of the meet award.
With his total lift of 1,350 pounds, Vara qualified for the regional meet.
Elijah Cortez-Hernandez also lifted a total of 1,350 pounds in the meet.
He claimed first place in the 220-pound weight class with his 600 pounds in the squat, 285 pounds in the bench, and 465 pounds in the dead lift.
Sammy Lara took first place in the 242-pound weight class. He totaled 1,290 pounds, including 495 pounds in the squat, 300pounds in the bench, and 495 pounds in the dead lift.
Marc Jaquez won top honors in the 114-pound weight class. He lifted an amazing 840 pounds.
Jaquez posted 320 pounds in the squat, 180 pounds in the bench press, and 340 pounds in the dead lift.
E.J. Chavez totaled 685 pounds to finish first in the 132-pound weight class.
Chavez squatted 260 pounds, benched 150 pounds, and dead lifted 275 pounds.
He edged out his UHS teammate, Jerry Martinez, who also totaled 685 pounds with 250 in the squat, 145 in the bench, and 290 in the dead lift.
Chavez earned the tie-breaker as he weighed in on the scale at 130 pounds, while Martinez’s weight was 131.5 pounds.
Shane Medrano placed second in the 148-pound class. He totaled 875 pounds, including 320 pounds in the squat, 190 pounds in the bench, and 365 pounds in the dead lift.
George Garza took second in the 220-pound class. His total lift of 965 pounds featured 385 pounds in the squat, 185 pounds in the bench, and 390 pounds in the dead lift.
Daniel Almedia won third place with a total lift of 1,040 pounds in the 165-pound class. He squatted 365 pounds, benched 205 pounds, and dead lifted 470 pounds.
Juan Gonzales’ total lift of 660 pounds gave him third place in the 181-pound division
He had a squat lift of 245 pounds, a bench lift of 140 pounds, and dead lift of 275 pounds.
Cesar Mendiola placed fourth in the 198-pound class and Rodolfo Reyes finished fourth in the 242-pound class.
Mendiola had a total lift of 1,070 pounds, including 445 in the squat, 235 in the bench, and 390 in the dead lift, and Reyes totaled 845 pounds, including 345 in the squat, 160 in the bench, and 340 in the dead lift.
