Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym will be the site for District 28-5A basketball competition Tuesday night.
The Uvalde Coyotes will close out the first half of their district season as they take on the Southside Cardinals.
Tip-off time for the varsity contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Preceding the varsity game will be a 5 p.m. junior varsity game.
In UHS’s Oscar Cruz Gym, the Uvalde and Southside freshman teams will tangle.
Coach Shawn Dalbert’s Cardinals, 3-3 in district competition, had a district basketball open date Friday night.
After winning back-to-back games over Eagle Pass Winn, 88-59, and Somerset, 73-63, the Cardinals lost a narrow 93-92 decision against the Floresville Tigers last Tuesday,
In an 88-59 district win by the Cardinals over Southwest earlier this season, forward Richard Torres, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, led the scoring for the Cardinals with 26 points.
Four other players scored in double figures, including guard Senobio Ortiz, a 5-foot-5 senior, with 12 points, guard Anthony Mendoza, a 5-foot-11 junior, and guard Travis Robles, a 6-foot senior, each scored 11 points, while guard Steven Quintero, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored 10 points.
Forward Nick Hernandez, a 6-foot-2 senior, netted six points.
Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes, 0-6 in district play and 6-17 for the season, were to play the Floresville Tigers at Floresville Friday night.
Results from that game were not available. Those results will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.
The Coyotes went into the Floresville game seeking their first district win of the season.
Last Tuesday night, the Somerset Bulldogs downed the Coyotes, 59-49, in Kinchlow Gym.
The Coyotes held a 25-23 lead early in the second half, but the Bulldogs outscored the Uvaldeans, 36-24, the rest of the way to win a hard-fought contest.
Donovan Davila scored 10 points to lead Uvalde’s offensive attack.
Others scoring were Cristian Treviño and Majik De La Garza each with eight points, Eric Flores with seven points, Peyton Carnes and Jackson Taylor each with four points, Estevan Ortiz with three points, Christian Rivera and Grant Taylor with two points each, and D’Andre Carroll with one point.
Two players scored in double figures for Somerset, including Matthew Soto with 21 points and Marky Soto with 11 points.
Following the game Tuesday night, the Coyotes will have the rest of the week off as they have an open date in their schedule on Friday night.
One week from tomorrow, the Coyotes will host the Medina Valley Panthers in Kinchlow Gym.
Varsity tip-off time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will begin at 5 p.m.
Prior to their loss to Somerset, the Coyotes dropped a 56-52 road decision against the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks.
Estevan Ortiz totaled 19 points to lead Uvalde’s individual scoring.
Majik De La Garza also scored in double figures. He posted 14 points.
The others scoring for the Coyotes were Donovan Davila with nine points, Christian Rivera with four points, and Cristian Treviño and Grant Taylor each with three points.
On Jan.24, the Coyotes will be on the road to play the Southwest Legacy Titans.
Varsity action is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
