Coyotes place second in powerlift

For the second Saturday in a row, the Uvalde Coyotes placed second in powerlifting competition in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

Coach Frank Gonzales’ Coyotes racked up 32 points to place second behind the Somerset Bulldogs, who totaled 65 points in the team points rankings.

Carrizo Springs finished a distant third with 19 points.

Two Uvaldeans, Gavin Vara and Sammy Lara placed first in their respective weight divisions.

Vara won the boys’ 181-pound class with his total lift of 1,285 pounds.

In the three elements of the competition, Vara squatted 505 pounds, bench pressed 240 pounds, and dead lifted 540 pounds.

Lara won the boys’ 242-pound class with a total lift of 1,145 pounds.
