Coyotes host Dragons Tuesday

Tuesday night in Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Uvalde Coyotes will go up against the Southwest Dragons in District 28-5A basketball.

Tip-off time for the varsity game is set for 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will begin at 5 p.m.

Coach Caesar Smith’s Dragons, 1-0 in district play and 6-9 for the season overall, will enter play here Tuesday following a home game against the Southside Cardinals Friday night.

Results from the Southwest-Southside game were not available at press time.

Last Tuesday night, the Dragons downed the Floresville Jaguars in a 57-54 road thriller.

Guard Vincent Fraga, a 5-foot-11 senior, racked up 26 points to lead Southwest’s offensive attack.

Forward Nathan Hernandez, a 6-foot-8 senior, also scored in double figures. He netted 10 points.

Hernandez was aided in rebounding by forwards Joshua Hernandez, a 6-foot-6 senior, and Mario Sanchez a 6-foot-5 senior.

Three players topped the scoring for Floresville, including Walker Hopkins, Dominic Davila, and Carlos Hernandez. They scored 21, 15, and 11 points, respectively.

Besides their win over Floresville, the Dragons have recorded non-district wins this season over San Marcos, 61-47, St. Anthony, 29-26, Memorial, 65-40, Austin Achieve, 66-21, and El Paso, 54-53.

Earlier this season, Southwest lost a 75-69 double-overtime decision against Boerne Champion.

They lost a 46-41 verdict against Boerne High in a game that went to overtime.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes will come into the game Tuesday following district road action against the Southwest Legacy Titans Friday night.

The Coyotes went into that ball game following a 59-30 loss to the Medina Valley Panthers in their district opener Tuesday in Kinchlow Gym.

They scored only six points in each of the first, second, and final periods.

The Coyotes scored 12 points in the third period.

Donovan Amaya was Uvalde’s lone player to get into double-figure scoring. He finished the game with 12 points.

Others who scored for the Coyotes were Raul Flores with five points, Jose Ruiz with four points, Chris Embers with three points; and Jose Luevanos, Jackson Taylor and D’Andre Carroll each with two points.

Sam Champlin and Brayden Haney each scored in double figures for Medina Valley. Champlin totaled 19 points, while Haney wound up with 17 points.

Following action Tuesday, the Coyotes will be on the road Friday night to play the Harlan Hawks at San Antonio.

Varsity competition is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff, while the sub-varsity contests both will start at 5 p.m.

The Harlan game will wrap up the pre-Christmas part of Uvalde High School’s basketball schedule.

Following the Christmas break, the Coyotes will resume district play with a home matchup against the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks on Dec. 29.

The varsity game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff, while both sub-varsity games will get underway at 12:30 p.m.

UHS’s first game of 2019 will come on Jan. 2 at Somerset when the Coyotes play the Bulldogs.

The varsity game is set to start at 1:30 p.m.,while the two sub-varsity games will begin at high noon.
