Coyotes battle Legacy Tuesday

Earlier this month, the Uvalde Coyotes and the Southwest Legacy Titans went an extra inning in their first District 28-5A baseball baseball game.

The Coyotes plated two runs in the top half of the eighth inning and held on to record a 3-1 victory over the Titans.

Those two teams will meet for the second time Tuesday night when the Coyotes host the Titans at Marvin Kolinek Field.

Varsity action will begin at 7 p.m. and will be preceded by a 4:30 p.m. junior varsity contest.

In the first district meeting, the Coyotes broke a scoreless tie as they scored one run in the sixth inning, but Legacy scored one time in the seventh inning to send the game to an extra inning.

The Coyotes loaded the bases in the top half of the eighth inning.

An error by the Legacy catcher allowed one run to score, while the other run came on a bases-loaded walk issued to David Torres.

Marcus De La Cruz led the Coyotes in hitting with two hits, while Joey Valerio, Diego Rodriguez, and Matt Sandoval each had one hit.

Valerio was the winning pitcher. He scattered three hits and struck out seven Legacy batters.

Coach Homer Flores’ Titans were scheduled to play the Southside Cardinals in district action Friday night.

Results from the game were not available.

Last Tuesday, the Titans posted a 5-2 win over the Floresville Tigers in competition at Legacy.

The Titans broke a 2-2 tie as they scored three runs in the fifth inning.

Adrian Rangel, Max Fernandez, Mark Garcia, and Rudy Gres each recorded two hits to pace Legacy’s 10-hit offensive attack.

For the Titans, it was their fourth consecutive district victory.

Prior to their win over Floresville, the Titans recorded district wins over Harlan, 5-4, Legacy, 6-5, and Somerset, 8-5.

Coach Sart Perez’s Coyotes, 6-2 in district and 9-8-1 for the season, will enter action Tuesday following a Friday showdown against the Medina Valley Panthers at Castroville.

Results from the Uvalde-Medina Valley game will be reported in the Thursday edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Coyotes and the Panthers entered action Friday locked in a two-way tie for first place.

Southwest Legacy, Southwest, and Eagle Pass Winn went into play Friday tied for third place, one game behind the Coyotes and Medina Valley.

The Coyotes entered action against MV trying to snap a two-game losing streak, including a district loss to Southside, 6-5, and a non-district loss, 11-8, to Fredericksburg.

The Coyotes were plagued by defensive errors in both losses.

Against Southside, the Coyotes totaled nine hits.

Marcus De La Cruz, Joey Valerio and David Torres each had two hits, while Chris Rivera, Matt Sandoval, and Jacob Albarado had one hit.

Following action Tuesday, the Coyotes will be on the road Friday for action against Southwest.
