Coyotes battle Billies Tuesday

Tuesday afternoon, the Uvalde Coyotes will be at Fredericksburg for basketball action against the Fredericksburg Billies.

The varsity ball game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. tip-off time.

Preceding the Uvalde-Fredericksburg varsity contest will be a 1 p.m. freshman game and a 2:30 p.m. junior varsity game.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes, 2-0 for the season, will enter play coming off a 78-73 road victory over the Lytle Pirates last Tuesday night.

Lytle got off to a 25-14 start in the first period, but the Coyotes battled back to cut the scoring deficit to two points, 39-37, by halftime.

The Pirates increased their lead to 59-54 by the end of the third period.

But the Coyotes outscored the Buccaneers, 24-14, and rallied to post a big road victory.

Five players scored in double figures to lead Uvalde’s scoring, including Donovan Davila with 15 points, Cristian Treviño and Estevan Ortiz, each with 13 points, Grant Taylor with 12 points, and Eric Flores with 10 points.

D’Andre Carroll totaled nine points, while Tito Gonzales, Chris Hernandez, and Jackson Taylor scored two points each.

Fredericksburg began this season with 10 lettermen, including two starters, from last year’s 28-9 ball club that finished second behind Boerne High in the District 28-4A basketball race.

Returning starters include guards Gus Martin and Ryan Davis, who are both seniors this season.

Some of the other top returning players are senior Kade Spies, Ethan Williams, and Joshua Wieneke, to name a few.

Last year, the Billies whipped the Coyotes, 62-34, in Kinchlow Gym.

Up 28-22 at halftime, the Billies outscored the Coyotes, 21-4, in the third period on the way to their lopsided victory.

Kade Spies and Gus Martin led Fredericksburg’s scoring with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

D’Andre Carroll topped the Coyotes with 10 points.

Following hoops action at Fredericksburg Tuesday, the varsity Coyotes will travel back to the hill country for weekend tournament competition at Kerrville.

The Tivy basketball classic is scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Next home action for the Coyotes will not be until Dec. 17 when the Uvaldeans host the Southwest Legacy Titans in their District 28-5A home opener.

Prior to their win over Lytle, the Coyotes recorded a 79-46 victory over the Bandera Bulldogs in a game played Nov. 16 in Harvey Kinchow Gym.

Ten Coyotes contributed to Uvalde’s scoring total.

Four players scored in double figures, including Grant Taylor with 16 points, Cristian Treviño with 14 points, D’Andre Carroll with 12 points, and Estevan Ortiz with 10 points.

Tito Gonzalez and Eric Flores each scored six points, Ryan De La Cruz racked up five points, Jose Luevanos and Christian Rivera each put in four points, and Jackson Taylor made two points.

Donovan Davila, Derrick Amaya, Chris Hernandez, and Angel Flores also saw playing time, but they did not get into the scoring column.

On Dec. 3, the Coyotes will be on the road to play the Laredo LBJ Wolves in a matchup featuring freshman, junior varsity, and varsity games.

The varsity Coyotes will compete in the Hondo tournament on Dec. 5-7, the junior varsity Coyotes will vie in tourney play at Del Rio on Dec. 6-7, while the freshman Coyotes will play the Somerset tourney set for Dec. 5-7.

The Coyotes will play the Medina Valley Panthers in their district opener on Dec. 10 at Castroville.
