Saturday at Waco’s Extraco Events Center, Avery Contreras will represent Uvalde High School in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state championship meet.
Action will get underway at 9 a.m.
Contreras, a UHS senior, will compete in the Class 5A Girls’ 165-pound weight division.
“It feels great to be going to Waco this weekend. I look forward to representing Uvalde High School in state competition,” said Contreras.
She recently qualified for state as she made a total lift of 840 pounds in the regional meet conducted at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial High School.
To qualify in her weight division, Contreras need only a total of 825 pounds, but she qualified with pounds to spare.
For Contreras it was time of triumph and joy, especially after narrowly missing out of qualifying for state in 2018.
She finished 15 pounds shy of lifting the total she needed in competition at the regional meet last season.
