Charles fêted by state as ‘hero for children’

Olga Charles, coordinator of the Uvalde Leader-News Newspapers in Education program, was named one of 15 “Heroes for Children” by the State Board of Education. She was recognized Sept. 15 during a ceremony at the William B. Travis State Office Building in Austin.

“Whether it is serving as a life coach, helping in the classroom, organizing the annual Christmas parade or helping students do research at the library, Olga Charles is at school every day helping the students of Uvalde CISD,” SBOE District 1 board member Georgina C. Perez said in honoring Charles.

“Even when working at her job as the Newspapers in Education coordinator for the Uvalde Leader-News, Charles is still helping teachers and students as she shows them how to use

newspaper in their lessons. The Uvalde superintendent calls her a ‘ball of energy’ who can always be counted on to volunteer.”

Jeanette Ball, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District superintendent, nominated Charles for the statewide honor that recognizes people for their volunteerism in the public schools of their communities.
