Savannah Valle of Uvalde was the first person to yell “Bingo!” at Herby Ham Activity Center’s inaugural cash-prize bingo games on Thursday evening, winning $50. After taxes, she took home $47.50 in cash.
“I’m planning to splurge a little,” said Valle, who later in the evening also won a door prize. She said she will definitely be going back.
The event drew a large crowd, with approximately 300 people in attendance, including 103-year-old Florence Sour of Leakey.
Cash prizes totaling $2,500 were distributed during the evening’s 10-game session. Attendees were also eligible to win other prizes, such as winnings from pull-tab games.
Thursday’s games lasted until 11 p.m., according to Herby Ham director Sue Schwencke Rankin, who said it ran an hour past its scheduled end-time of 10 p.m.
“We did have some glitches, as expected with the first-time,” she said, “and we ran an hour longer than expected, but overall it was a very successful evening.”
Rankin also said that she received positive feedback, and the crowd seemed to appreciate this opportunity being brought to Uvalde.
