The Leona River as it runs through Uvalde Memorial Park should be drained next week, with the process taking about two days, according to city parks and recreation director Rob Fowler.
Passersby of late may have noticed the stagnant waterway is ridden with algae and leaf debris.
Fowler said the city owns a water pump, and a contractor will repair piping that connects the fountains. The repairs are being made in hopes of beautifying the river and creating a better ecosystem for local wildlife.
