What if UHS had completed the season?

Several years ago, I read a book entitled, “What If?”

In the book, eminent historians imagined what might have been had certain things in history happened differently. There are chapters on the American Revolution, Civil War, and world events.

For those of you who like history, I would recommend the book. My reason for mentioning this book today is to segue into some sports speculation.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University Interscholastic League stopped athletic activities about midway through the month of March.

Eventually, the UIL canceled the remainder of the spring sports season. But what if the coronavirus had not brought the spring sports season to an early end?

Keep in mind that I am looking at things through my partisan Uvalde High School-supporting glasses.

That being said, I think the Coyotes and the Lobos would have enjoyed a terrific spring. When activities were suspended, the Coyotes were locked in a tie for first place in District 28-5A baseball, while the Lobos were in fourth place in district softball.

We were four games into district baseball play and the Coyotes already had chalked up an impressive road victory against the pre-season favorite Medina Valley Panthers.

The Coyotes had a favorable second-half schedule as they were to play Medina Valley and the other top teams in the district on their home turf at Marvin Kolinek Field.

I think the Coyotes would have won the district title and gone on to post-season success.

The Lobos were at the half-way point of their district schedule. Like the Coyotes, the Lobos faced a favorable second-half schedule with their toughest games to be played at home.

I think the Lobos would have advanced to the playoffs, which is very impressive when you consider how young and inexperienced the team was this season.

As for track-and-field, tennis and golf, I believe the Coyotes and the Lobos would have fared well against district opponents.

Many of our athletes would have advanced to post-season competition.

The girls’ soccer season was cut short and the Lobos were on their way to post-season play. Most likely, they would have done well.

It’s too bad that our athletes were not able to complete the spring season, because all of the UHS teams were looking good at the time that activities were suspended.

What if? That is all we can say at this point. Congratulations go to all of these athletes for putting forth a great effort during a spring season that was cut short.
