Sometimes a team just has an off night.
That’s the way it was for the Uvalde Lobos who lost a 6-2 decision to the San Antonio Harlandale Indians Monday at the Uvalde High School softball field.
The Lobos outhit the Indians, 12-10, and had runners in scoring position in every inning of the game.
Pitchers Denise Longoria and Megan Flores combined efforts to strike out 15 Harlandale batters.
And the Lobos committed only one defense error.
Despite all that, the Lobos suffered their first district loss of the season.
Base running errors and a lack of timely hits were a problem for the Lobos. In the first inning and the second inning, the Lobos had a base runners thrown out at third base.
The Lobos, who wound up stranding 10 base runners during the course of the ball game, left two runners on base in the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth inning.
Harlandale’s first run came in the fourth inning.
With two outs and a base runner on third base, a wild pitch resulted in a run.
In the fifth inning, Raven Segovia came up with a clutch hit for the Indians. She hit a two-out, two-run double to center field.
Lobos starting pitcher Denise Longoria exited the game earlier in the inning.
With a runner at first base, Longoria was hit with the ball in the shin of her left leg with a hard line-drive shot off the bat of Nadia Dominguez, who made it to first base on an infield single.
Megan Flores immediately replaced Longoria in the pitching circle.
With two runners on base and no outs, Flores struck out the first batter she faced.
The next batter legged out an infield single.
Flores struck out the following batter.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Raven Segovia hit a double to left center field to drive in two runs.
Flores got the next batter to pop out for the third out of the inning.
The Indians scored three runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.
Harlandale pitching ace Raven Segovia, who scattered nine hits, but allowed no Uvalde runs for six innings, retired the first two batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Kamryn Arredondo then singled to center field.
UHS freshman Ashton Leigh spoiled Segovia’s shut-out bid.
Leigh ripped a 2-1 pitch from Segovia into the outfield past right fielder Selena Molina.
As the ball rolled to the outfield fence, Arredondo scored and Leigh advanced all the way to third base on her triple.
Anahi Ramirez followed Leigh’s three-bagger with a triple of her own.
Segovia got the next batter to fly out to preserve Harlandale’s 6-2 win.
Anahi Ramirez had three hits off Segovia. Ramirez tripled and singled twice.
Kylie Sendejo and Kamryn Arredondo singled twice, Ashton Leigh tripled, while Nadia Gonzales, Megan Flores,Nathalie Ramirez, and Deandra Vera each singled.
