Uvaldeans face long road trip tomorrow


The Uvalde Coyotes will make their longest District 28-5A basketball road trip of the season tomorrow night when they travel to Floresville to play the Floresville Tigers.

Action in the varsity game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will get going at 5 p.m.

Coach Damon Liverett’s Tigers, 2-3 in district and 9-10 for the season, knocked off the Southside Cardinals in a 93-92 district hoops thriller Tuesday.

Prior to the Southside game, the Tigers lost a narrow 70-65 decision against the Somerset Bulldogs.

Three players scored in double figures for Floresville, including center Dominic Davila, a 6-foot-5 junior, with 17 points, guard Carlos Hernandez, a 5-foot-9 senior, with 16 points, and guard Walker Hopkins, a 6-foot senior, with 14 points.

Guard Phillip Jaramillo, a 5-foot-9 senior, netted nine points.

Matthew Soto totaled 24 points to lead Somerset.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes, 0-6 in district play and 6-17 for the season, will be trying to secure their first district win of the year.

The Coyotes will enter play coming off a pair of close district losses against the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks and the Somerset Bulldogs.

Last Friday afternoon at Eagle Pass, the Coyotes lost a 56-52 decision against Winn’s Mavericks.

Estevan Ortiz totaled 19 points to lead Uvalde’s individual scoring.

Majik De La Garza also scored in double figures. He posted 14 points.

The others scoring for the Coyotes were Donovan Davila with nine points, Christian Rivera with four points, and Cristian Treviño and Grant Taylor each with three points.

In basketball action Tuesday in Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Coyotes lost a 59-49 verdict against Somerset.

Donovan Davila scored 10 points to lead the Coyotes, while Matthew Soto totaled 21 points to lead Somerset’s scoring.

Following action tomorrow night, the Coyotes will be back home to host the Southside Cardinals Tuesday night in Kinchlow Gym.
