Uvalde, Eagle Pass Winn vie in district softball Tuesday

Though it is early in the 16-game District 28-5A softball race, the Uvalde Lobos will play a big game Tuesday when they host the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks.

The varsity game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be preceded by a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest.

Both the Lobos and the Lady Mavericks advanced to the post-season playoff last season and were pre-season picks to challenge for post-season playoff honors this season.

But Medina Valley, Somerset, and Southwest are off to a quick start in district play, while Winn has lost one district game and the Lobos have lost two games.

The winner of the game Tuesday will stay close to the district leaders, while the loser will drop an additional game back in the district teams standings.

Coach J.J. Iracheta’s Lady Mavericks, 1-1 in district play and 10-3 for the season, were to play the Southside Lady Cardinals in district softball Friday night at Eagle Pass.

Results from the Winn-Southside game were not available.

Last Tuesday, the Winn girls rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post an 8-3 road win over the Floresville Jaguars.

Ariana Soto and Anissa Salazar each doubled to lead Winn’s eight-hit attack against Floresville.

The Eagle Pass girls recently captured runner-up honors in the San Antonio Harlandale tournament.

They recorded tourney victories over Jefferson, 14-6, Poteet, 7-5, McCollum, 6-5, and Harlandale, 7-4, before losing a 14-3 decision against Boerne in the championship game.

Winn lost a 13-10 verdict to the Somerset Lady Bulldogs on their district opener on Feb. 19 at Eagle Pass.

Martha Garcia homered and doubled for the Lady Mavs in that ball game

Interim UHS head softball coach Kristina Finger’s Lobos, 1-2 in district play and 7-5 for the season overall, will enter action Tuesday following a Saturday afternoon road matchup against the Harlan Lady Hawks yesterday at San Antonio.

Results from that contest will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

Last Tuesday night, the Lobos were crushed by the Southwest Dragons, 12-0, in action at the UHS softball field.

Southwest scored two runs in the first inning, two runs in the fourth inning, and two runs in the sixth inning.

Up 6-0, the Dragons plated six runs in the seventh inning to top off their lopsided victory.

They totaled 11 hits off Uvalde pitching.

The Lobos managed only two hits in the contest.

Megan Flores singled in the second inning and Anahi Ramirez singled in the seventh inning.

The UHS girls won two of the five games they played in the East Central-Judson Invitational softball tournament conducted Feb. 21-23

They posted wins over La Vernia, 1-0, and San Antonio Harlan, 20-2, while their three losses came against East Central, 8-1, San Antonio Johnson, 9-0, and Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway, 10-0.

Following action Tuesday, the Lobos will be back in district play on Friday when they journey to Somerset to play the Lady Bulldogs.

One week from Tuesday, the Lobos will host the Floresville Jaguars in district play at the UHS softball field.
