Uvalde boys and girls are victorious in tennis competition

Uvalde High School tennis players won a lot of matches play in UHS Invitational tournament played last weekend.

Beau Gonzales won the Boys’ 1 singles division. He defeated his UHS teammate, Andrew Melchor, in the title match.

In Boys 2 singles, Colton Gaston downed UHS teammate Derrick Rodriguez in the match for fifth place.

Bailey Wimberley advanced to the finals of the Girls’ 1 singles. She lost to Mary Cobarde of Laredo Nixon in the finals.

Kezia Rodriguez, who lost to Cobarde in the semifinals went on to win third place with a victory over Vanessa Villa of San Antonio Memorial.

Bailey Towne lost to Jocelyn Arellano of Laredo United South in the match for fifth place.

Rylee Dodson, Briana Amor, and Jenessa Magana lost opening-round matches, but won in the consolation bracket.

In Girls 2 singles play, Karley Stephens lost to Madison Barkley of Knippa in the match for third place, while Ashley Garcia beat teammate Joana Reyes for the consolation title.

Others who wound up in the consolation division were Uvaldeans Elizaria Hernandez, Destiny Gomez, Kaitlyn Alejandro, and Starr Bustamante.

In Boys 1 doubles action, Lorenzo Perez and Riley Dalrymple captured third place.

The team of Juan Melchor and Ricardo Moreno placed fifth, while Zack Gonzales and Julian Bermea finished eighth.

Michael and Fransisco Guerra lost in the consolation title match.

Don Ku and Rey Cruz lost in the consolation title match of Boys’ 2 doubles, while Zack Gonzales and Joel Zamarripa lost in the consolation semifinals.

Brenda Garcia and Gaby Rodriguez won in the finals of Girls’ 1 doubles.

Mattie Elder and Crystal Mason lost in the semifinals and then lost in the match for third place.

Marilyn Torres and Juliana Gutierrez claimed seventh place.

Alice Chum and Michelle Miller finished fourth in Girls’ 2 doubles.

Giovanni Valdez and Daniella Rodriguez won the third-place match in Mixed 1 doubles.

This weekend, UHS will host a junior varsity tennis tournament, while varsity players will vie in the Ingram tournament.
